Wedgewoods Fire Alarm and Evacuation Procedures

Wedgewoods Fire Alarm and Evacuation Procedures

EVACUATION VIA STAIRWELL EXITS

If there is a building fire alarm you are required by fire regulations to evacuate the building. Grab your keys and get out. The best way to get out of the building is through the stairwell nearest to you, or the front door if it is nearer to you than the stairwell. The stairwells are designed and intended to provide a safe evacuation route to the outside of the building. At the bottom of the stairwell you should use the exit door (they all have an audible alarm) to get outside the building. From there you can walk away from the building.

DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS DURING A FIRE OR FIRE ALARM. Please consider that if you are disabled and can’t negotiate stairs then it might be safest for you to live on the first floor. If you are in danger or can not evacuate yourself, or you are aware of someone who can not or will not evacuate, call 911 and advise the dispatchers of the situation.

If there is a fire alarm you must evacuate the building and wait for further instructions from the fire department before re-entering.

NEVER PROP OPEN ANY FIRE DOOR. The fire doors are intended to be normally closed.  Also, before opening any door, check to make sure there is no smoke or fire on the other side of the door. All fire doors have windows so you can look and see if there is any fire danger on the other side of the door.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS AND ALARMS

If you are personally aware of a fire and you are evacuating the building, please note that there are fire alarm pull handles and fire extinguishers near the hallway exit to every stairwell. If possible you could use the fire extinguisher to try to put out the fire yourself. If the fire alarm is not already sounding, you should pull the fire alarm handle to alert everyone else in the building so they can evacuate. It is safest to evacuate the building and let the fire department handle the fire.

PETS

If you have pets in your unit try to take them with you when you evacuate. If you can’t find or catch your pet then you must evacuate anyway. Once you’re outside you could advise the fire department that your pet is still in your unit. The fire department’s priorities are to evacuate and rescue people, get the fire under control, and then rescue pets if possible.

SMOKE DETECTORS

The smoke detectors in your unit are not tied into the building fire alarm systems, because we can’t have a building fire alarm and evacuation every time someone burns food. Unit owners are responsible to inspect, test, and maintain the smoke detectors in their units, on a regular basis.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Wedgewoods is a relatively new commercial building and we have state of the art fire alarm, fire safety, and fire suppression systems, and the building design and construction was according to the applicable fire codes and regulations. Even if you do not see flames or smell smoke, you should not assume there is no danger to yourself, and therefore DO NOT STAY IN YOUR UNIT. The fire alarm/ safety/ suppression systems are in place to try to protect you from a building fire, and you should trust the warning systems and evacuate the building when there is a fire alarm. You should not use the elevators during a fire or fire alarm because it is prohibited by fire regulations. This is because a fire could cause the elevators to stop working, and you could be trapped in the elevator while the building burns.

If there is a fire drill everyone will be advised well in advance and the fire drill would be conducted under very controlled conditions. It is a criminal offense to cause a false fire alarm, and you could face criminal charges if you are found responsible for a false alarm.

If you smoke on your balcony, remember that you are prohibited from throwing anything off your balcony, in particular cigarette butts or any smoking materials. We live in a very flammable forest. If you are aware of anyone throwing cigarette butts into the forest or from a balcony please advise the property manager right away, and appropriate action will be taken. Also consider that insurance and municipal fire investigators are extremely good at figuring out what caused a fire and you could be held responsible if you cause a building or forest fire.
